The important point is that the LIFE article created the impression that gambling was the exclusive territory of La Cosa Nostra and that there was much “fixing” of games. In reality, however, many people were involved—and still are—in illegal gambling who were not Mafia members or associates. In certain areas, many large bookies did cut the local Mafia power in for a slice of the profits, but the United States is a big country, and many bookies were not dominated by the mob. The doomsday scenario LIFE expressed that mob attempts at fixing would threaten public confidence in the honesty of sports never came about, even with the revelation of a number of successful fix attempts. LIFE succeeded in magnifying a genuine concern far beyond reality.

In 1970, respected crime writer Nicholas Pileggi made a rare mistake. He wrote an article in New York magazine titled “The Decline and Fall of the Mafia” that was at least two decades premature. Pileggi’s mistake pales in comparison to his true-crime Mafia books, Wiseguy (Simon & Schuster, 1985) and Casino, (Simon & Schuster, 1995), which were adapted for the big screen as Goodfellas, discussed later in this chapter, and Casino.
